National Apprenticeship Week (9th–15th February) is a week-long celebration recognising the impact apprenticeships have on young people and businesses.
Apprenticeships have always been an important part of Hydramec, even in our early days. In fact, our current Managing Director, Danny Church, started his career as an apprentice. Since then, many young people have started out at Hydramec, some have moved on after gaining their qualifications, while others have progressed within the company, including into management roles.
We believe in providing people with the opportunity to learn and develop in a practical working environment, which allows us to pass on our knowledge and experience while also benefitting from the new ideas and enthusiasm that apprentices bring to the workplace. Welcoming apprentices into the business also helps us to continue building a skilled team for the future.
Our apprentices bring fresh ideas and a strong desire to learn, and we are very proud to support them every step of the way. Having started as an apprentice at Hydramec myself many years ago, I believe apprenticeships are important because they provide real opportunities to develop skills and pursue long-term careers. – Dean Risby, General Manager
We currently have eight apprentices at Hydramec: four specialising in welding, three in engineering, and one in machining. They are gaining hands-on experience across different areas of the workshop, including working on boats, manufacturing components, and supporting fabrication projects.

Hydramec’s Eight Apprentices
Since starting their apprenticeships, they have developed a range of technical and professional skills. These include using tools and machinery safely and efficiently, reading and interpreting engineering drawings, understanding fabrication and welding processes, and much more. They have also strengthened their communication skills, developing skills for communicating with fellow colleagues, managers, and across departments.

When asked, all of our apprentices said they would recommend an apprenticeship to others as it allows them to gain recognised qualifications and practical experience in the workplace, all while earning an income.
As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we are proud of the contribution our apprentices make to Hydramec and look forward to supporting their development in the years ahead.
